About Christina Rossetti
Christina Rossetti became inspired to write from a young age due to her upbringing in the popular Rosetti family of poets and writers.
A member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood literary movement in England, she was known for her children’s, devotional and romantic movement poems. Her best-known poetry collections include “Goblin Market and Other Poems”, “The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems” and “A Pageant and Other Poems”.
The words of the Christmas carols, “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Love Came Down at Christmas” were written by her.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Italian nobleman and poet Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti and his English wife, Frances Polidori.
She was also the sister of artist and poet Dante Gabriel, author Maria Francesca and writer/critic William Michael Rossetti.
She broke off her engagements to painter James Collinson and linguist Charles Cayley on religious grounds.
Death
She died on December 29, 1894, three months after her breast cancer, which had been cured by removing a tumor, recurred.
