About Christian Morgenstern
He was a German poet and writer whose works were largely influenced by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A number of his songs were set to music by such composers as Hanns Eisler, Sofia Gubaidulina and Paul Graener.
Early Life
Born in Munich, Germany, Morgenstern pursued law at the University of Breslau and at the University of Berlin.
Notable Works
He started off as a journalist then transitioned steadily into translating the plays of such Northern European dramatists as Knut Hamsun and August Strindberg. His most renowned poetry collection was the humorous “Galgenlieder,” first published in March 1905. Five years later, he published “Palmström.” His posthumous publications include “Palma Kunkel,” “Der Gingganz” and “Alle Galgenlieder.”
Personal Life
In 1910, he married Margareta Gosbruch von Liechtenstern.
