About Chris Patten
Christopher Francis Patten is a political figure who served in several positions to ensure the smooth governance in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. He was the twenty-eight Governor of Hong Kong between 1992 and 1997. He was also the Chairman of the Conservative Party.
Personal Life
He is from an Irish family who were catholic. In 1971, he married Lavender Thornton, a barrister who had three children for him. Alice Patten, an actress, is one of his daughters.
Career
In 1986, he became the minister of Overseas Development. About three years later, he became Secretary of State for the Environment. Later in his life, he released “Not Quite the Diplomat: Home Truths About World Affairs”, which was his memoir.
In 2010, he was tasked with overseeing the visit of Pope Benedict XVI’s to the United Kingdom. His time in Hong Kong was made into a docuseries titled “The Last Governor”.
Achievements
He was appointed a “Companion of Honour” by the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II in 1998. About eighteen years later, he was made “Commander of the Legion of Honour”.
Trivia
In 1997, he was the last Governor to be appointed in Hong Kong to supervise the later years of British administration in the Colony.
