About Chesley Sullenberger
Retired airline captain and Air Force fighter pilot Chesley Sullenberger III rose to prominence in 2009 when he saved 155 people, himself included, on board a flight which he was commanding. Having been commissioned as a US Air Force officer in 1973, he went on to serve as a fighter pilot before turning to a career in civil aviation in 1980. On 15th January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, which Sullenberger was flying as the captain, encountered a bird strike that caused the engines to fail. His decision to do a crash landing on the Hudson River saved everyone’s life.
Family Life
He grew up along with a sister named Mary in Denison, Texas. He has been married to a fitness instructor named Lorraine Sullenberger. They are parents to two adopted daughters.
Achievements
His accolades earned include The Air League’s Founders’ Medal, and the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators’ Masters Medal.
