About Chen Ning Yang
Known by a lot of aliases, Chen Ning Yang (or Frank Yang) is a renowned physics theorist and co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957.This brilliant scientist has made remarkable contributions in condensed matter physics, gauge theory, and statistical mechanics, and among other areas.
Family and Educational Background
Born to a mathematics professor, Frank Yang attended both elementary and high school in Beijing. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1942 from National Southwestern Associated University, with a specialization in the application of group theory to molecular spectra. Under the supervision of Wang Zhuxi, he completed his graduate studies in statistical mechanics. He received a scholarship from the US government's Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program.
During his doctorate studies at the University of Chicago, he studied with Hungarian-American theoretical physicist Edward Teller also known as the “Father of the hydrogen bomb”.
At the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, he worked with Chinese-American physicist Tsung-Dao Lee. By 1955, he had become a full professor at the institute.
In his very distinguished career, he was once named the Albert Einstein Professor of Physics at Stony Brook University in New York.
Other notable honors received by the Nobel Prize winner include:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society
- The Chinese Academy of Sciences
- The Royal Society in London
He has also received a number of honorary doctorate degrees, including one from Moscow State University and Princeton University.
Wives and children
In 1950, he married Chih-li Tu, a teacher, and they had three children together. His marriage to a then 28-year-old Weng Fen a year after the death of his first wife caused a bit of controversy. The scientist was by then in his early 80s.
Career
His published works include “Elementary Particles: A Short History of Some Discoveries in Atomic Physics, a history of research into the components of the atom”. He was the first Director of Stony Brook University's Institute for Theoretical Physics, which is now known as the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics.
Most Notable Achievement and Honors
As a particle physicist he disproved the law of conservation of parity in the interactions of fundamental nuclear particles with Dr. Tsung Dao-Lee and won the Nobel Prize for their theory. He received the award in 1957.
In 1980, he received the Rumford Prize, an award that is given by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to scientists that have made stellar contributions in the study of heat and light.
In 1986, he was honored with the National Medal of Science by then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan.
In 1993, the physicist received the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Achievement in the Sciences from the American Philosophical Society.
In 2001, Yang Chen-Ning received the King Faisal International Prize. Two years prior to that award, he had received the Lars Onsager Prize.
