About Charley Pride
Legendary American entertainer, Charley Pride gained global reputation due to his amazing talent as a singer and guitarist. He is known for his numerous chart-topping singles including 1969’s single, "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)". His breakthrough single, "Just Between You and Me", came out in 1966.
Pride’s Baseball Career
In addition to his talent in music, Pride was also an excellent baseball player who played for the team, Memphis Red Sox in the now-disbanded Negro league – he was named into the Negro league All-Star team on two occasions.
He also starred for several other baseball teams in the minor leagues including Boise Yankees and Missoula Timber Jacks.
Family
His parents were farmers who practiced sharecropping. He had 10 siblings including his brother, Mack Pride, who was also a baseball player.
He married his wife, Rozene in 1956 and birthed three children with her – Craig, Dion, and Angela.
Awards
Pride’s illustrious music career saw him receive many accolades from a number of prominent awarding bodies. For instance, he received multiple Grammy awards including the award for “Best Sacred Performance (Musical)”, which he received in 1971.
He was named the “Favorite Country Male Artist” at the American Music Awards in 1973 and 1976. He was inducted into the “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” in the year 2000.
After winning several awards from the “Country Music Association”, he was eventually honored with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2020.
Facts
He was inspired to embark on a career in music by country music legends, Red Foley and Red Sovine.
He was signed to prominent record label, RCA Records in 1965. He went on to become one of the label’s most successful signees after rock legend, Elvis Presley.
His maiden single, "The Snakes Crawl at Night" was released in 1966.
He was a part owner and a huge supporter of the American baseball team, Texas Rangers.
He learnt how to play the guitar, by himself, at the age of fourteen.
