About Charles Lyell
Charles Lyell was a renowned Scottish geologist who propagated the teachings of uniformitarianism. He argued that the Earth’s features were produced by biological, chemical, and physical processes which took place within a period of time. He also contributed to lots of studies including climate change, and earthquakes.
As a writer
Lyell initially started his career as a writer. During that period, he earned lots of money from his numerous published books. In 1830, he released the full volume of perhaps his most popular work titled “Principles of Geology”.
Some of his well-known books were titled “Elements of Geology” and “Travels in North America”.
Family
His father, Charles Lyell, was a scholar who worked as a translator. He had nine siblings. He wedded Mary Horner in 1832.
Education
In 1819, he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford. Two years later, he obtained his master’s certificate from the same institution.
Awards
He was a recipient of many accolades including the Copley Medal, Royal Medal, and Wollaston Medal. He became a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1841 and a knight in 1848.
Trivia
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and James Hutton were some scholars he looked up to growing up.
He was a close friend of Charles Darwin.
