About Charles I of Austria
He was an Austrian Emperor. At the same time, he served as the King of Bohemia, King of Croatia, and King of Hungary.
In 1916, Charles I of Austria ascended the throne after the assassination of his uncle, Franz Joseph. But his reign was short-lived, lasting only two years. In 1919, Charles I was officially dethroned. Two years later, he planned to reclaim the Hungarian throne but his efforts yielded no results.
Family
He was the child of Princess Maria J. of Saxony and Archduke Otto F. of Austria. In 1911, he got married to Zita of Bourbon-Parma. He gave birth to eight children including Otto, his first child, Archduchess Adelheid, Archduke Felix, Archduke Rudolf, and Archduchess Elisabeth.
Death
In 1992, Charles I died of respiratory failure while in exile
Honors
He was the recipient of the Knight of the Golden Fleece in 1905. He was also awarded Grand Cross of the Military Order of Max Joseph from the Kingdom of Bavaria, Grand Cordon of the Order of Leopold from Belgium, Knight of Saints Cyril and Methodius from the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and Commemorative Medal for the Coronation of King George V from the United Kingdom.
