About Charles Herbert Best
Diabetes has been the leading cause of mortality in recent years, especially in the 1900s. Without a proper way to manage this illness, many deaths were recorded. However, after years of research, American Canadian scientist Charles Herbert Best became well recognized for his involvement in the invention of insulin, a diabetic therapy. In 2021, he was inducted posthumously into Canada's Walk of Fame.
Growing Up
The scientist was born to Herbert Huestis Best and Luella Fisher Best. The young scientist grew up in Pembroke and later enrolled in the University of Toronto in 1915 to study medicine. He graduated from the University and enlisted in the Canadian Army serving with the 2nd Canadian Tank Battalion in 1918. In 1929, Best became a professor of physiology at the University of Toronto.
Career
After the death of Best's aunt from Diabetes, he graduated from the University. He became an assistant under Dr. Frederick Banting, who, with his help, discovered the pancreatic hormone insulin. The discovery of insulin saved millions worldwide, and Best was later nominated a Nobel Prize in physiology for his works in 1950.
Personal Life
The renowned scientist tied the knot with Margaret Mahon in 1924. The scientist died in 1978 and was survived by 2 children.
Achievements
During WWII, he was instrumental in creating a Canadian program for obtaining and utilizing dried human blood serum. The scientist also served as an adviser to the World Health Organization's Medical Research Committee.
