About Charles Duke
Charles Duke, in full Charles Moss Duke Jr., is an American retired astronaut, test pilot, and an ex-member of the United States Air Force (USAF). During the "Apollo 16" mission in 1972, he served as a lunar module pilot and became the 10th and youngest person to walk on the Moon at age 36.
Background & Education
The astronomer attended Lancaster High School and graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy as valedictorian. He holds a bachelor's degree in Naval Sciences from the United States Naval Academy and a master's degree in Aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In addition, he has received flying training at the Moody Air Force Base, Webb Air Force Base, and Spence Air Base.
NASA & Post Retirement
In April 1966, NASA selected him as part of 19 recruited astronauts. He then served on the astronaut support crew for the "Apollo 13" mission. In 1972, he was appointed as a Lunar Module pilot for the successful "Apollo 16" mission. Together with Commander John Young, they logged 20 hours and 15 minutes on the lunar surface, engaging in extravehicular activities.
He retired from NASA in 1975. Following his retirement, he held positions as the president of Charlie Duke Enterprises, Inc., and a Brigadier General in the "US Air Force Reserve."
