A name that will never go out of circulation, Charles Dow went from a poor farm boy to become the co-founder of The Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones.
Background
Son of a farmer, Dow started working early to support his family after his father's death. He worked with the Springfield Daily Republican from 1872 to 1875 and joined the Providence Journal in 1877, where he wrote business stories.
Career
In 1882, Charles Dow partnered with another journalist Edward Davis Jones and founded Dow, Jones & Company. The following year, they published the first edition of the Dow Jones stock average. Dow also served as a partner in a stock brokerage called House of Goodbody. In 1889, the first issue of The Wall Street Journal was published with Dow serving as the editor.
In 2007, Dow Jones & Company was acquired by media guru Rupert Murdoch, and the Journal was expanded to a lifestyle magazine, covering international and national news.
