About Charles Bachman
Charles William Bachman III, better known as Charles Bachman, is a prominent figure in Database Technology. He was an American computer scientist responsible for developing Database Management Systems, one of the most critical areas in computer science.

He was born in Manhattan, Kansas.
He joined the US Army in 1943. He served in the southwest Pacific theatre during the Second World War. He was discharged in 1946.
Education
In 1948, he earned a BSC in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University. He then received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Database Career
In 1950, he began working as an operation and research engineer at Dow Chemical Company and became a “Data Processing Manager” in 1957. He joined General Electric in 1960.
At General Electric, he developed the “Integrated Data Store (IDS),” “WEYCOS,” and “dataBasic.”
He founded his company, Bachman Information Systems, in 1983. They developed a series of computer-aided software engineering (CASE) products. They also developed the “BACHMAN/Data Analyst” and “Bachman Diagrams.”
He held over 12 USA patents in the field of database software. He earned numerous honors, including a “National Medal of Technology and Innovation.”
