About Chaim Weizmann
Chaim Azriel Weizmann was the first President of Israel who played a crucial role in major Israeli events leading to the birth of the nation.
Early Life
Born in Motol, Russia (now Belarus), Weizmann was the third of fifteen children. As a young boy, he demonstrated a talent for science, and moved to Germany to study chemistry. While living in Germany, he joined a group of Zionist intellectuals and then moved to Switzerland to complete his studies.
Scientific and Political Careers
In 1899, he received his PhD in Organic Chemistry and taught at the University of Geneva and the University of Manchester in England. Weizmann became a British citizen, and under the name Charles Weizmann he registered close to 100 research patents.
Throughout his career, Weizmann remained passionate about Jewish freedom, playing active roles in both World Wars. When Israel became a recognized independent state in 1947, he was elected to serve as the newly-formed country’s first president. He served until his death in 1952.
Personal Life
Weizmann married his first wife Sophia Getzowa for four years before being romantically linked to Vera Khatzman in 1900. After his divorce, he married Khatzman and they had two children: Michael and Benyamin.
