About Cesare Lombroso
Cesare Lombroso changed the face of the field of criminology when he veered off the conventional classical school. According to the school, crime is a trait that is characteristic of human nature. A trained physician, he worked in the army as a surgeon before working at his alma mater, the University of Pavia as a visiting lecturer. He also served as a professor of forensic medicine and hygiene at the University of Turin. He is remembered best as the founder of the Italian School of Positivist Criminology. His theory of anthropological criminology postulates that criminality is inherited.
Family Life
He was the son of Zeffora Levi and her tradesman husband, Aronne Lombroso. He grew up in a wealthy Jewish family. He had five children through his marriage to Nina de Benedetti.
Death
He died on October 19, 1909 at 73 years old in Turin, Italy.
