About Cecil Howard Green
Cecil Howard Green was an English-American geophysicist, who co-founded Texas Instruments. Together with his wife, Ida, the couple were known to be generous philanthropists and helped found several educational institutions, including the University of Texas at Dallas.
Background
Green was born in England and later moved with his family to San Francisco, where he experienced the 1906 earthquake. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1924. While at school, he met his wife, Ida.
In the early 1940s, along with his business partners, Green bought a petroleum exploration company. The company expanded into the manufacturing of electronic instruments and was rebranded as Texas Instruments. Green served as the company’s vice president and later, chairman.
Charity Works
Together with Ida, Green was an active philanthropist and the couple donated over $200 million in the educational and medical spaces. In 1991, he received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.
Awards & Honours
He received the 1978 Maurice Ewing Medal, the highest award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The following year, both Green and Ida won the Public Welfare Medal and in 1985, Green won the Golden Plate Award.Cecil Howard Green Rank
