About Catherine of Valois
Catherine of Valois, also known as Catherine of France, was England’s Queen Consort between 1420 and 1422. She was the wife of Henry V of England and the youngest daughter of Charles VI of France.
Early life
She was born in the “Hôtel Saint-Pol,” a former Paris royal palace. As a result, she had abundant toys depicting French princesses and many religious books during her childhood.
Royal Marriage
Her marriage was part of a major plan to ascend the Prince of Wales (Henry V) to the “throne of France.” Thus, the Royal Family of England believed they could end the “Hundred Years’ War” when she married Henry V, and their descendants ascended the throne of France. The marriage took place on June 2, 1420, and although it did not instantly end the “Hundred Years’ War,” it resulted in the signing of the “Treaty of Troyes.” Catherine’s son, Henry VI, later ascended the throne of France.
She married Owen Tudor after Henry V died. They had a son together.
Death
She died aged 35 on January 3, 1437, at Westminster Abbey. Although the cause of her death is still debated, many historians report that she died shortly after suffering complications during childbirth.
