Background
The Las Cabezas de San Juan native began his professional career with his local club Sevilla FC at the age of 18, while the team was competing in the second division.
In a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad, he made his La Liga debut in the 1999–2000 campaign. He received a transfer to S.L. Benfica in Portugal after Sevilla was demoted at the end of the season. He joined Valencia a year later and spent the next nine years there, winning two La Liga championships, the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
He signed a three-year contract with Villarreal in 2010, but in 2012 he switched to Deportivo de La Coruna. He joined the Kerala Blasters in 2015, and a year later he announced his retirement.
Achievements
Marchena participated in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney, Australia, and helped Spain to an Olympic silver medal in the men’s football tournament.
He was part of the Spanish team that lifted the coveted FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010. Two years prior, he featured in the Spanish team that won the 2008 UEFA European Championship.
In addition to winning three La Liga titles with Valencia, he won the 2007/08 Copa del Rey title.
