Background
Carl was born in Minnesota to Jamaican parents. He attended South High School where he found his passion for acting. He moved on to Macalester College where he started his career as a journalist.
Career
Carl moved to New York where he worked with fellow actor Danny Glover in the stage production of “Sizwe Bansi is Dead”. He made his film debut in the 1979 hit “Escape from Alcatraz”, working side by side with Clint Eastwood.
However, it was his role as Detective Marcus Petrie in the 1982 television series Cagney & Lacey that propelled him to stardom. In 2009, Carl voiced the character Tornado Champion in the animated series “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” and worked on other animations such as “Justice League Unlimited” “Black Panther” and “Young Justice”.
In September 2022, Carl announced he was a cast member of another installment of the “Captain America” franchise “Captain America: New World Order”.
