Family and Background
Carl Hiaasen was born in Plantation, Florida, a Fort Lauderdale suburb, to Odel and Patricia Hiaasen. He began writing at the age of six, when his father gave him a typewriter as a Christmas present.
He attended Emory University after graduating from Plantation High School in 1970. While in school, he wrote satirical humor columns for the student-run newspaper “The Emory Wheel”. He transferred to the University of Florida in 1972 and began writing for The Independent Florida Alligator. He received his journalism degree in 1974.
Career
He worked as a reporter for TODAY (Cocoa, Florida) for two years before joining the Miami Herald in 1976. At Miami Herald, he worked as a general assignment reporter and later joined the paper's award-winning investigations team.
He began writing novels in the early 1980s with the late William D. Montalbano, a good friend and distinguished journalist. They collaborated on three mystery thrillers, "Powder Burn," "Trap Line," and "Death in China”.
Achievements
In 2003/2004, he was awarded the Damon Runyon Award by the Denver Press Club.
