About Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim
Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was a renowned Finnish politician and army officer who started his service with Russia’s Imperial Army. He was a member of the army during the 1904 Russo-Japanese War before switching his allegiance to Finland after the country gained its independence in 1917.
During the infamous Finnish Civil War in 1918, he was made the leader of the White Guard. Throughout the Second World War, he served as the commander-in-chief of the country’s defense forces. He retired from the service in 1946 as a Field Marshal.
Political career
Mannerheim held some political positions while he was still in the military. In 1918, he was appointed the Regent of Finland after Frederick Charles of Hesse abdicated his throne. After the resignation of Risto Ryti in 1944, Mannerheim was elected as the President of Finland and served in that position for two years.
Family
This politician was named after his grandfather who was a jurist and entomologist. He was the son of renowned businessman Carl Robert Count Mannerheim and his wife Hedvig Charlotta Helena von Julin. He had seven siblings including Countess Eva Mannerheim-Sparre, and Baroness Eva Charlotta Lovisa Sofia Mannerheim.
His marriage to Anastasie Arapova ended in 1919. He had two children named Sofia and Anastasie Mannerheim.
Education
Carl Gustaf studied at the Hamina Cadet School, as well as the Nicholas Cavalry School.
Trivia
He was voted the greatest Finnish of all-time in a survey which was conducted five decades after his demise.
