Martha Jane Canary, or Calamity Jane, was a famous American frontierswoman that lived in the second half of the 19th century. She was known to be acquainted to Wild Bill Hickok.
Her Nickname
Calamity Jane supposedly got this nickname in a military conflict with American Indians. Jane claimed that during the conflict, a man named Cpt. Egan was shot and she caught him as he was falling from his horse. After saving him, he dubbed her Calamity Jane.
Later life
Jane became a performer in her later years, starring as a storyteller in productions like Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.
