About C.V. Raman
C.V. Raman was a renowned Indian physicist, widely recognized for his work in the aspect of light scattering. Before becoming a popular figure in physics, he worked in his country’s finance department as an accountant. He then moved to become a professor at the University of Calcutta. In 1926, he established the Indian Journal of Physics and was soon made the editor.Family
He was born as Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman to Parvathi Ammal and Chandrasekhara Ramanathan Iyer. He grew up together with seven siblings.
He was married to a lady known as Lokasundari Ammal. He left behind two children namely Venkatraman Radhakrishnan, a radio-astronomer, and Chandrasekhar Raman.
Achievements
In 1930, he received a Noble Prize for his immense contribution to physics, and also earned his knighthood that same year.
He was also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
Trivia
He slashed his Bharat Ratna medal to register his displeasure about some policies of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's.
