About Bülent Ecevit
Probably, Turkey’s only leftist Prime Minister, this poet, and politician served as the 16th Prime Minister of Turkey four different times between 1974 and 2002.
Background
Born in 1929 in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), Ecevit graduated from Robert College in 1944. He moved to London where he worked in the Turkish embassy from 1946 to 1950 and would compose poems.
Career
During his first term, Ecevit lifted the ban on the cultivation of opium and gave amnesty to over 40,000 political prisoners. He also went to war with Cyprus and this resulted in arms sales ban from the United States for three years. Ecevit has survived six assassination attempts as the politics in Turkey was widely divisive.
Between 1980 to 1987, he and his associates were banned from politics after the coup but this persistent politician returned to office in 1999. His last term was plagued by an economic crisis caused by the previous government and a deadly earthquake. Ecevit resigned from active politics in 2002 due to health issues and his party's low ratings.
Personal Life
Ecevit married his high school sweetheart Rahşan Ecevit in 1946.
