About Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich, born Bernard Rich, was a child music prodigy years before earning a reputation in later years as a jazz bandleader. At just two years old, he started playing drums and when he turned four, he was billed as ‘Baby Traps the Drum Wonder’ on Broadway.
He started pursuing jazz professionally in 1937, aged 20, performing with Joe Marsala, the clarinettist. He finally found fame as a bandleader when he formed his Buddy Rich Big Band in 1966.
Family Life
His parents, Robert Rich and Bess Skolnik were Jewish-American vaudevillians. Actor Jonathan Haze is his cousin. From 1953 to his death, he was married to dancer Marie Allison with whom he had a daughter named Cathy.
Achievements
He is a Percussive Arts Society Hall of Famer and was the recipient of a Berklee College of Music honorary doctorate.
Death
He died on 2 April 1987 while receiving treatment for a malignant brain tumour.
