About Bruno Schulz
Schultz was known as one of the most prominent Polish writers of the 20th century. Some of his notable works include “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass” and “The Street of Crocodiles”.
Family
The Polish writer was the son of Jakub Schulz and Henrietta née Kuhmerker.
Education
He studied at Władysław Jagiełło Middle School in Drohobych from 1902 to 1910 and later studied architecture at Lviv Polytechnic
Career
“The Street of Crocodiles”, a collection of Schulz’s short stories, was published in Polish in 1934 and was later translated into English in 1934.
He wrote a story titled ``A July Night” in 1928 which was published in his second edition titled “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass” in 1937.
Schultz’s works have been adapted into two films; “The Hour Glass Sanatorium" directed by Wojciech Has in 1973 and “Street of Crocodiles", a 21-minute-long stop-motion animation by the Quay Brothers.
He also published “The Complete Fiction of Bruno Schulz” in New York in 1989. His unfinished work “The Messiah” and other short stories from the 1940s were lost during the Holocaust. “The Book of Letters”, a compilation of his letters, was published in Polish in 1975.
Awards
He received a Golden Laurel award from the Polish Academy of Literature.
Death
He died on November 19, 1942 from a gunshot by a German Nazi.
