Bruce Catton, born Charles Bruce Catton, was a famous American journalist and historian. He is best remembered for his profound writings and books on the “American Civil War.”
Education & Journalism Career
Catton enrolled in Oberlin College in 1916 but could not complete his degree due to his two-year service in the US Navy during World War I. After the war, he began his journalism career as a freelance editor and reporter.
Catton worked for many newspapers and publications, including The Boston American, the Newspaper Enterprise, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the Cleveland News. In 1956, Oberlin College gave him an honorary degree.
Writing Career & Major Works
In the 1950s, he was a founding editor and senior of the “American Heritage magazine,” penning over 160 articles for the publication.
Catton received critical acclaim for his American Civil War history trilogy about the “Army of the Potomac:” “Glory Road,” “Lincoln’s Army,” and “A Stillness at Appomattox.” The last book earned him a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize in 1954.
Catton was revered as a genius historian for his unique ability to give historical narratives an immediacy of the news.
Death
He died from a respiratory illness at age 78 in August 1978.
