After an active high school baseball career, Gardner enrolled at the College of Charleston, South Carolina and was starter for the college team. He had a successful college career and led his team to the Southern Conference. The Yankees selected him in the 2005 MLB Draft.

Gardner began his professional career playing in the minor leagues after his draft. He finally made his debut with the Yankees in 2008. The following year, his team won the World Series for the first time in 9 years. In 2022, he became a free agent.
