About Bona Sforza
Bona Sforza became the Queen of the Kingdom of Poland in 1518. She ascended the throne due to her marriage to Sigismund I the Old, who ruled the kingdom between 1506 and 1548. With her marriage, she also served as the Grand Duchess of Lithuania.
Before occupying that position, she served as the Duchess of Rossano and Bari. As Queen, Bona was involved in many cultural and political activities. She was credited for starting the Volok Land Reform during the infamous Chicken Rebellion.
Family
She was the third child of Isabella of Naples and Gian Galeazzo Sforza. Her maternal grandfather was Alfonso II of Naples, who served as the King of Naples between 1494 and 1495. Bona had many children with Sigismund including Isabella, Queen of Hungary; Anna, Queen of Poland; and Catherine, Queen of Sweden.
Trivia
She was accused of murdering Ettore Pignatelli, her former lover.
Her loan to Philip II of Spain in 1557, in what would be termed as the Neapolitan sums, is considered as one of the most controversial issues in the history of both the Kingdom of Spain and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
