About Bill Russell
Bill Russell was arguably the greatest American professional basketball player. He started his successful National Basketball Association (NBA) career in 1956 with the Boston Celtics. He played with the Celtics from that time until his retirement as a player in 1969.
Apart from his successful career as a player, the Hall of Famer also became a successful NBA coach, and coached teams such as the Boston Celtics and the Sacramento Kings.
Achievements
During his career in the NBA, he won a total of 11 NBA championships, including two as player/head coach of the Celtics. In 2011, President Barack Obama honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Over the years, he earned induction into a number of Halls of Fame including the FIBA Hall of Fame.
Russell was named NBA's MVP five times. He received this honor for the first time in 1958. In 2019 he was honored with the NBA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Trivia
He made history in 1959 by becoming the first NBA player to travel to Africa.
