About Bill Hoest
American cartoonist Bill Hoest was best known for creating “The Lockhorns” and the “Laugh Parade”.
Early Years
Hoest was born in Newark, New Jersey. He was in the US Navy for two years and also studied at Cooper Union. He started working as a greeting card designer from 1948 to 1951, before becoming a freelancer. His earliest works first appeared in popular magazines like Playboy and Collier’s.
Career
In 1960, he released the comic strip “My Son John” in the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate. The strip lasted for two years and Hoest later took an assistant job on the comic strip “Penny” created by Harry Haenigsen. After Haenigsen suffered an injury, Hoest took over the strip. He also worked on “The Lockhorns”, “Bumper Snickers” and “Agatha Crumm”.
Awards
Hoest was a three-time recipient of the National Cartoonists Society awards.
