Actress Betty Grable built an image as a ‘sex symbol’, which helped maintain her celebrity status and made her successful for the duration of her film career. She was 12 years old when she had an uncredited role in her first film in 1929.
After failing to achieve success within her first ten years as an actress, she decided to quit but changed her mind when she was signed by 20th Century Fox and appeared in the box-office hit “Down Argentine Way” in 1940. Grable’s other popular films include “How to Marry a Millionaire” and “Mother Wore Tights”.

She was born to John Grable and Lillian Rose Hofmann. She divorced actor Jackie Coogan two years after their 1937 wedding. She also had two daughters with trumpeter Harry James, her husband from 1943 to 1965.

She died on 2 July 1973 from lung cancer. She was 56.
