Background
Garrett was born in Missouri's Saint Joseph. Her mother managed a department that sold sheet music. She received a full scholarship and enrolled in the Annie Wright School in Tacoma, Washington. She made the decision to plan plays and musicals for important events throughout the academic year because the school lacked a drama department. Others encouraged Betty to think about a career in theater after she performed in ‘Twelfth Night’ during her senior year.

Garrett and her husband were involved with the House Un-American Activities Committee as a result of their prior ties to the Communist Party. Her employability was impacted by this.
She made television appearances in ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and "The Golden Girls" later in her career.
