About Betty Carter
Betty Carter, as she’s affectionately known, was a talented American singer who won the heart of many music lovers with her improvisational singing technique. By the end of 1996, she had recorded over 21 studio and live albums. Some of her famous ones are titled “Social Call”, “At the Village Vanguard” and “Droppin' Things”.
Her road to fame began at the age of 16 years when she won an amateur competition in her local area.
Family
Outside showbiz, she was known as Lillie Mae Jones. She spent her childhood days with her parents, Bessie and James Jones. Her husband was called James Redding, and she left behind two children namely Myles and Kagle.
Achievements
In 1988, she won the “best female jazz vocalist” at the Grammy Awards.
She received an award from The National Medal of Arts in 1997.
In 1994, she was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame.
Death
She died in 1998 after she was said to be suffering from pancreatic cancer.
