About Betsy Ross
Although claims that Betsy Ross was the first person to make the first American flag have been disputed by historians, her contributions as a seamstress of flags have not been in doubt. The upholsterer is believed, mostly by her family, to have been permitted by then-commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, General George Washington to change the design of the six-pointed stars to five-pointed ones per her suggestion in 1776. Her contract with the Pennsylvania navy during the American Revolution as its official flag maker is documented. She is also known to have later served as a U.S. flag maker.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Rebecca James and Samuel Griscom, who later severed ties with her after she eloped with John Ross in 1773. Their marriage ended with Ross’ death in 1775. Two years later, she married Joseph Ashburn, a mariner with whom she had two children. He died in 1780. She got married for the third time to John Claypoole. They had five children together.
Death
She died on January 30, 1836 at 84 years old.
