Besse Cooper made the headlines in 2011 when she was officially named the oldest existing person in the world. She obtained this record after the death of Maria Gomes Valentim, who lived in Brazil. In the 1910s, she worked as a teacher in Georgia, U.S.
Personal Life
Her parents were Angeline Berry and Richard Brown. In 1924, she became the wife of Luther Cooper who died in 1963. The couple were blessed with four kids. Before her death, she had eleven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Education
In 1916, she ended her education at East Tennessee State University (then known as East Tennessee State Normal School).
Recognition
In 2012, a bridge located in Between, Georgia was named after her.
Death
She suffered from stomach flu which later caused her death in 2012.
Trivia
Before her demise, she became the 8th person to clock 116 years old.
A self-named charity foundation was posthumously established by Paul Cooper, her grandson, in 2013.
