About Bernardo Provenzano
Bernado Provenzano was a notorious Italian mobster. He was the boss of the Sicilian Mafia group Corleonesi. He was nicknamed “Binnu u tratturi”, meaning Bernado the tractor. He was born on January 31, 1933 and died at age 83 from bladder cancer.
Mafia before Salvatore Riina’s Arrest
Bernardo and fourteen gunmen led by mafia boss Luciano Leggio killed fellow Mafia boss Michele Navarra (also known as 'u patri nostru (our father)) in 1958. He teamed up with Luciano to murder many of Navarra’s supporters.
After another attack on Navarra’s men, he (Bernardo) ran from another mafia vendetta. In September 1963, he was wanted by police for the murder of Navarra’s men and other mafia crimes.
He took part in the 10th December 1969 Viale Lazio massacre. When Police arrested Leggio, Salvatore Riina turned boss and Bernard was next in command.
The Corleonesi dominated the mafia in Sicily after the 1981/1982 Second Mafia War that killed more than a thousand mafiosi.
From 1980 to late 1990, Bernardo hid in his private stronghold where he met and dealt with mafiosi.
Mafia activities after Riina’s Arrest
Bernardo became chief of the Corleonesi when Rinna was arrested and handed a life imprisonment in 1993 for murders and two massacres which killed two prosecutors.
The mafia was less murderous under his control, avoided attacks on authorities and police provocations.
Arrest and Trial
He was on the run from police since the 1963 murder until he was captured in 2006. He was tried for several murders, including that of top officials, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with other mobsters.
Death
Bernado Provenzano died on July 13, 2016, aged 83. The cause of death was said to be complications from a bladder cancer that he had been battling for some time.
