His senior brother by name Jerome McCarthy played for Kaizer Chiefs as well as other teams and his younger brother by name Mark McCarthy also played soccer. In 2004, he got married to Maria Santos. About three years later, the marriage fell on the rocks. He left the marriage with three daughters and later married Stacey Munro in 2014.
Career
He started playing for a division club as a teenager. He played for Seven Stars then moved to Cape Town Spurs; a team that later merged with his previous team and became Ajax Cape Town. He went on to join Ajax. He was then sold to Celta De Vigo at a fee of over six million Euros making him the most expensive South African player to be transferred at that time. He did not do so well there so he was loaned to Porto. He played in other teams including Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Whitehall Welfare among others.
