About Ben Wilson
Ben Wilson was a promising American basketball player whose career was tragically shortened in 1984 when he was shot in school. Following his impressive performance at high school, Wilson was tipped by many scouts to become one of the top NBA stars of his generation.
Before his death, he was ranked the best high school basketball player in the United States.
Shooting incident
The basketball star was shot by Billy Moore, a student of Calumet High School, who had come to Wilson’s school to avenge an alleged robbery incident which involved his cousin. Wilson, however, was trying to solve an issue with his girlfriend called Jetun Rush.
Without knowing, Wilson bumped into Moore who angrily yelled at him. The basketball player later approached him and they started exchanging words. Moore then pulled out the gun he had carried to the school to help his cousin and shot Wilson twice. He was later rushed to the hospital and died from the multiple injuries he developed.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Mary and Ben Wilson Sr. His siblings are Curtis Glenn, Jeffrey, and Anthony. He had a child with Rush called Brandon Wilson.
Education
He was one of the top players at Neal F. Simeon Vocational High School.
Trivia
During his time at Simeon, NBA legend Derrick Rose wore Wilson’s number 25 shirt.
“Benji”, a documentary about the fallen basketball player, premiered on ESPN in 2012.
