About Bela Fleck
Bela Anton Leos Fleck, professionally called Bella Fleck, is a globally influential American “banjo” star. Fleck has earned over a dozen Grammy Awards and he is notable for his association with the bands “Béla Fleck and the Flecktones” and “New Grass Revival”.
Early Life
New York City is his hometown. During his childhood, he was captivated by bluegrass music. He began playing banjo at age 15 after being influenced by the songs of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. He learned banjo privately during his years at the “High School of Music and Art” in New York, experimenting with new methods, techniques, sounds and genres.
Bands & Music Career Highlights
After high school, he joined the “Tasty Licks” band, recording two albums with them during his membership. He then released his debut solo record “Crossing the Tracks” in 1979.
In 1981, he toured with the “Spectrum” band and joined the “New Grass Revival (NGR)” later that year. However, he performed with “NGR” until 1995.
He co-founded “Béla Fleck and the Flecktones” in 1988. Between 1988 and 2011, they recorded ten studio albums and by 2019, they had won seven Grammy awards.
He became part of the “International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame” as an “NGR” member in 2020.
