Barry Frank Steven Sheene was his full name, and he was a fantastic British motorcycle racer in the late 20th century. His career spanned between 1968 and 1984, after which he entered into motorsport commentating and property development in Australia.
Background & Early Life
The rider was born in London and was raised in the Holborn neighborhood. His father was a former motorcyclist and a mechanical engineer, who gave him great inspiration to pursue his racing career. However, before he began professional road racing, he worked as a delivery driver and messenger for several companies in London.
Career Highlights & Victories
He began professional motorcycle racing in 1968, at age 18. He then won his first racing event at “Brands Hatch” and came second in the “125cc” class in 1969.
He became Britain’s “125cc” champion in 1970, riding his famous Suzuki “RT67 twin-cylinder” racing motorcycle, which cost him £2,000. Between 1972 and 1973, he signed with Suzuki and won the 1973 “Formula 750” European Championship.
He was a two-time “Grand Prix motorcycle racing” world champion, winning the 1976 and 1977 “500cc titles”.
Death
On March 10 2003, He died at a hospital in Queensland, Australia aged 52 from cancer of the stomach and esophagus.
