About Barbara Thompson
Barbara Thompson rose to prominence when she joined the New Jazz Orchestra group which was led by composer Neil Ardley. The English saxophonist later joined the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble where she performed alongside Charlie Mariano, Albert Mangelsdorff, and Wolfgang Dauner.
She also performed with the Colosseum band before creating her musical groups. Her association with English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber played a key role in her rise to stardom. Together, they worked on many musicals including “Starlight Express” and “Cats”.
Personal Life
She was married to English musician Jon Hiseman who also performed with the Colosseum. Their two children are Anna and Marcus. The former is famously known in the music scenes as Ana Gracey.
Education
Thompson attended the Royal College of Music.
Achievements
In 1996, she was made a Member of the British Empire.
Trivia
She appeared in an episode of the "24 Hours in A&E" television documentary in 2020.
In 1997, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease which caused her to retire four years later.
She was influenced by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.
