About Barbara Hepworth
Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth was a famous sculptor whose works were among the first abstract sculptures produced in England. Her usage of melodic forms and sense of material allowed her to become one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.
Family and Background
She attended Wakefield Girls' High School, where she won music prizes at the age of 12 and a scholarship to study at the Leeds School of Art.
She met her first husband and fellow artist John Skeaping in Rome on a travel scholarship. They had a son together. They got divorced in 1933 and she got married to Ben Nicholson with whom they shared triplets together.
Career
Her early work was heavily influenced by abstraction and continental art movements. In 1926, Hepworth and Skeaping pioneered ‘direct carving’, which describes the practice of carving directly into wood or stone rather than modeling sculpture in clay and then handcrafting the finished work.
Some of Hepworth’s most famous works include “Reclining Figures” (1932) and “Pierced Hemisphere I” (1937).
She had a solo exhibition at Wakefield Art Gallery in 1951. In the 1960s, she experimented with new materials and began working in bronze, slate, and printmaking.
Death
Barbara Hepworth died, aged 72, on May 20, 1975, in an accidental fire at her Trewyn studios.
