About Baltasar Gracián
Baltasar Gracián was a Spanish priest, philosopher, and writer whose works are regarded as some of the earliest versions of the Spanish literary style called Conceptismo.
Background
Gracián was born in Belmonte in the kingdom of Aragon to a noble family. He was raised mostly by his uncle. Between 1616 and 1619, he studied at a Jesuit school in Zaragoza and later attended the College of Calatayud in 1621. He was ordained in 1627 and said his final vows a few years later.
Works
His work as a preacher made him famous and when he became Rector of the College of Tarragona, he published some of his early works, including “El héroe”, “El politico”, and “El discreto.” Most of his books were written under his pseudonym, Lorenzo Gracián or the anagram, Graciá de Marlones. His book “El criticón” is considered his masterpiece and influenced other historical writers and philosophers like Voltaire and La Rochefoucauld.
