Azealia Banks is an American rapper and singer who first gained wide recognition for appearing in the 2012 edition of BBC’s annual poll “Sound of...”—which aims to promote new artists – and in the British music magazine NME’s Cool List in 2011. After releasing a critically acclaimed mixtape, titled Fantasea, in 2012, Banks released her first studio album in 2014. The album, Broke with Expensive Taste, was led by the singles "Yung Rapunxel", "Heavy Metal and Reflective", "Chasing Time", and "Ice Princess".
Humble Beginnings
Unable to find a manager and a recording studio that would take a chance in her during her early years, Banks turned to MySpace, YouTube, and her own website in releasing her music. She began her path to popularity when her first single "212" became popular in European countries in 2011, which caught the attention of British producer Paul Epworth.
