About Axel Springer
Axel Springer was a German media mogul who founded the Axel Springer SE publishing company in 1976. The company is known for its nationwide tabloid known as Bild Zeitung. Springer became notorious for his anti-New Left reportage. In 1956, he became the owner of the Berlin-based publishing house Ullstein Verlag.
In 1972, the Red Army Faction bombed the office of the newspaper in a protest against their news items.
Family
He was born to Ottilie and Hinrich Springer. He became the husband of Martha Else Meyer in 1933. In 1978, he married his fifth wife called Friede Springer. His previous spouses included German equestrian Rosemarie Alsen, and Helga Ludeweg.
Honors
He received the Leo Baeck Medal in 1978, and was awarded the Konrad Adenauer Freedom Prize three years later.
Trivia
After the Second World War, it was rumored that Springer was receiving funds from the United States.
