About Avery Johnson
Avery DeWitt Johnson is a well-known personality in American basketball. He is a National Basketball Association (NBA) coach and a retired basketball player.
Early life
He led St. Augustine High School, New Orleans, to the “Class 4A Louisiana State Championship.”
He graduated from Southern University in 1988. However, he broke the record for most assists per game in the NCAA Division I during his senior year. Unfortunately, he was not selected in the 1988 NBA draft.
Professional Career
During the 1988 summer, he played for the Palm Beach Stingrays in the United States Basketball league (USBL). He then joined the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1989-1990 season.
From 1990 until his retirement in 2004, he played in the NBA for various teams, including Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, and Golden State Warriors.
However, he is famously known for his time at San Antonio Spurs between 1994 and 2001. He was integral to their NBA championship win in the 1998-99 season. Further, he scored the winning basket to clinch the title in Game 5 of the championship.
Coaching Career
He has served as head coach in the NBA for the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas
