Personal
Aung was married to Michael Aris from 1972 until his death from prostate cancer in 1999. He was only able to see his beloved wife 5 times during the 10 years of her imprisonment. Pope John Paul II made a personal appeal to allow him to enter Burma to see her before his death but it was denied. They have 2 sons together.
