About Arvydas Sabonis
Arvydas Sabonis is a former Lithuanian basketball star who helped the Soviet Union to attain gold at the Olympic Games in 1988. He later played for Lithuania at the 1992 and 1996 Games and won bronze in both competitions.
Career highlights
He played his first professional game in 1981 as a member of Žalgiris in his native country. Throughout his eight years stay with the team, he won the Soviet Premier League three years in a row. He was a member of the team that won the FIBA Club World Cup in 1986.
He also played for other popular teams in Europe such as Fórum Valladolid, and Real Madrid before moving to the United States to play in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Family
He has been married to Ingrida Mikelionytė, an actress and model who won the first edition of the Miss Lithuania pageant. His children include Domantas, Tautvydas, and Žygimantas. The former is also a renowned basketball player.
Education
Sabonis is a product of the Lithuanian University of Agriculture.
Achievements
His name has been included in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and the FIBA Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He became the head of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation in 2011.
