Arthur Szyk was a renowned artist and illustrator who called himself a “soldier in art.” He used his art to show his support for social causes like racial equality and religious tolerance.
Life
Szyk was born in Lodz, Poland and developed an interest in art while he was still very young and his father sent him to study at Academie Julian in Paris. He later returned to Poland to further his studies at Jan Matejko of Fine Arts and in 1914, traveled to Palestine with other Polish-Jewish students. The First World War occurred while he was in Palestine.
Artist Career
By the end of the war, Szyk had developed his craft. Together with his wife, Julia and kids, the family moved to France, where Szyk worked as an illustrator. Some of the books he worked on include “The Book of Esther” and “Jacob’s Well.” He moved extensively, from Morocco to England, and the United States.
