About Arthur Schlesinger Jr.
American historian and educator Arthur Meier Schlesinger is best known for his books on the presidencies of Andrew Jackson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. In 1966, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his biographical work and in-depth look at the Kennedy presidency.
About
Born to Elizabeth Harriet Bancroft and historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, he graduated summa cum laude with his first degree from Harvard College at the age of 20.
He joined the Office of War Information after a failed military medical examination and worked for the Office of Strategic Services from 1943 - 1945 as an intelligence analyst.
Marriages and Children
He had five kids from two marriages. His first marriage, to American author Marian Cannon, lasted from 1940 to 1970. He then went on to marry Alexandra Emmet Allan, in 1971.
Career
From 1946 until 1961, he served as a history professor at Harvard. His Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Age of Jackson” was released in 1946. A fervent supporter of Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson, the historian, later served as his primary speechwriter.
At the City University of New York, he started teaching history in 1966, and in 1994 was made professor emeritus. “The Imperial Presidency” (1973), and “War and the American Presidency” (2004) were a few of his other works.
